Function and Content words

content words:

nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs

function words:

helping verbs, preposition, personal pronouns, relative pronouns like WHICH and THAT, determiners A and THE: all the little words.

The content words are an "open" category: words can be added, e.g., when a new term or name is created.

The function words are a "closed" category: new ones cannot be invented. They are a fixed list of words.
